Where Your Warehouse Needs Anti-Slip Tape
Industrial workplaces are a common location for slip and fall accidents. With the combination of heavy machinery, lots of movement, and a mixture of elements without the right measures in place employees can easily become injured.
It is important to maintain a company culture that showcases the importance of safety. It not only makes your current employees' morale high when everyone is safe, but is also a great way to attract new talent. By following OSHA guidelines and taking the proper steps, you can easily minimize warehouse accidents from occuring while employees are working.
Anti-Slip Tape in the Warehouse
Anti-slip tape is the warehouse manager's best friend. It is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent trips, slips, and falls in the warehouse. Even with difficult to maneuver locations and slippery conditions there is anti-slip tape that can handle it.
Beyond anti-slip tape, you will want to make sure you have markers for highly slip prone areas. Assess your warehouse and look for commonly wet areas, recently polished floors, or surfaced that contain dry materials (commonly wood shavings). These should not only have anti-slip tape applied, but also have caution signage to inform people of the highly slippery surfaces. This combination alone is enough for most people to avoid an accident.
Depending on the location and elements, there are several types of anti-slip tape. Their common advantage is they are all relatively inexpensive and easy to apply/remove as needed. You will notice many vary based on where you can use them and the designs, shapes, and sizes they are offered in.
As a global leader in adhesive coating and non-slip tapes, Jessup Manufacturing is sharing the most common areas our clients request anti-slip tape products and how they are applying them.
Top Warehouse Locations to Apply Anti-Slip Tape
Anti-slip tape commonly goes by names like non-skid tape, stair treads, or even traction tape. They all have the same goal in mind- to offer traction to prevent slip and fall accidents. While workers can be required to wear high traction shoes, having that added tread on the floor results in a less slick surface and lowers the chance of an accident.
1. Entrances, Exits & Loading Docks
Anywhere that people are coming in and out of needs to be treated with caution. The weather elements are bound to come inside, which can easily create a slick surface. On top of that, oftentimes people will be preoccupied with whatever they are carrying or whomever they are speaking with and not focusing on the safety of their walk.
To keep people safe around exterior doors you will want to apply a heavy duty anti-slip tape that is specifically able to handle water. This will help protect against outside moisture getting in and lessen the likelihood of a slip and fall accident. Consider using a 50mm wide anti-slip tape which can make a big impact and can also serve to support any anti-slip mats you already have in place.
Similar to any door leading to the outside, loading docks have a reputation of being dangerous. Oftentimes, many people are crowded around all with jobs to do- none of that includes thinking about the slippery conditions around them. With many loading docks also having ledges, this can create the perfect storm for an accident to occur.
Anti-slip tape, preferably military-grade anti slip tape, is an excellent option around loading docks. This tape can not only withstand the elements, but handle excessive heavy foot traffic. It is an excellent investment to protect your workers.
2. Ramps
Any place of elevation change is ideal for slip and fall accidents, even without water in place. Elevation naturally creates a slippery surface. With the simple addition of anti-slip tape to ramps or elevation changes you can ensure a safer warehouse environment.
If the ramp is prone to getting wet you will want to make sure you choose an anti-slip tape that is able to withstand the elements. We recommend a heavy-duty grade anti-slip tape if that is the case in order to prevent slip and fall accidents.
3. Stairs
Whether inside or out, stairs will also be a top offender when it comes to slip and fall accidents. Luckily, stair treads are an inexpensive investment that make a big impact.
Do you have exterior stairs or indoor ones that are prone to water? Make sure you use a water-resistant anti-slip stair tread.
If workers are known to be carrying things and are often distracted on the stairs make sure you also plan accordingly with a heavy-duty anti-slip stair tread.
Besides anti-slip stair treads, you should add caution signage and consider photoluminescent glow-in-the-dark markings. This combination is an excellent reminder of the stairs and to “WATCH YOUR STEP”.
