What is the best griptape for my skateboard?

Any skateboard knows the second they get a new board the itch to use it happens. But with every new shiny board begs that question- how should I grip it?

Grip tape is key to apply before ever skating on your board, no matter if you are a novice or professional. Quality grip tape not only keeps the integrity of the board (that means it keeps the deck nicer for longer), but on top of that majorly prevents slip and falls from occurring. That means by applying a solid grip tape you can practice and hit more tricks- quicker and injuring yourself. 

So how do you know what is the best griptape for your skateboard? Unfortunately there is not one straight answer. Depending on the board, your skating style, and even plain old preference, the grip tape you think is the best might not be the best to another skateboarder. However, there are some tried and true factors that should be considered when narrowing down your search for the best skateboard grip tape. 

MATERIAL
For the most part, skateboard grip tape is made from one of two materials- either aluminum oxide or silicon carbide. The latter is a bit more expensive, but gives a longer lifespan and has been consistently reported to better conform to deck concaves with easier trimming ability. That means that it won’t give out and tear as easily as an aluminum oxide type might. 

Another consideration when it comes to material is to look for one that markets itself with laminated and solvent based pressure sensitive adhesive layers. This is just technical talk for saying that it will create a rock-solid bond to your board and withstand whatever you throw at it much better than anything else on the market.

BOARD SIZE
Another big factor that will narrow down your choices is the size your deck is. You need to get a grip tape that will seamlessly cover the entire board deck so make sure you know dimensions before purchasing. Grip tape is commonly made in 9’’ x 33’’ sheets which are perfect for street skateboard setups, but be aware that longboard grip tape will measure differently, in some cases up to 12’’ x 4’’.

PRO TIP: Add an extra 1 ½ inches to every side to ensure a good fit for your skateboard.

BUBBLE PROOF
This is a top complaint of skateboarders. You find what you think is the perfect grip tape, but then you go to apply it and it has a ton of air bubbles after applying. This is a total downer to not only the style, but will also cause the grip tape to wear out quicker, making it less effective. 

Look at the packaging to see that it promotes itself as “BUBBLE FREE” or similar. Ones that market themselves as forming to your board is another way to say they likely won’t bubble on you. Oftentimes tougher and thicker grip tapes are harder to apply and remove, but will give that bubble free protection. Be aware though, even bubble proof grip tapes can get bubbles if you poorly apply them- so make sure you read the directions and take the time to do it right.
