Should I Buy a Bath Mat or Bath Rug?
We all strive for our bathrooms to be clean, odor-free, and maybe even a little bit “spa-like”. A successful bathroom will be designed with both functionality, and style in mind. However, with slip and fall accidents in the bathroom topping the reasons for emergency room visits it also needs to have safety top of mind.
When keeping your bathroom functional, stylish, and safe you will likely look to add either a bath mat or a bath rug. Do you know the difference between the two? If not, no worries- most people are unaware of the differences even though they have distinct characteristics. Keep reading to learn the differences and choose which option is safest for your bathroom space.
What is a Bath Rug?
When it comes to styling your bathroom, a bath rug is a common choice to add character. Bath rugs can help tie together decor and create a focal point in the small space. But while bath rugs provide an excellent aesthetic function, that is where it stops. As mainly decorative, they often lack in areas where bathrooms require help.
TRIPPING HAZARD
While we can all agree a bathroom floor with nothing on it can be a slipping hazard, bathrooms with bath rugs can be tripping hazards. With their added lip it is not uncommon for people to trip over bath rugs and in a small space that can be especially dangerous. To add to this, most bath rugs do not have an anti-slip backing so if you do purchase one, you will want to buy the backing separately to put under the bath rug in order to prevent movement.
MOLD/MILDEW
Another disadvantage is their pile construction is not nearly as absorbent. Bath rugs should be cleaned at least weekly and inspected for signs of mildew, stains, or water damage.
What is a Bath Mat?
Where bath rugs lack, bath mats shine. Bath mats provide an excellent anti-slip surface in bathrooms and even in the shower or tub. Bath mats soak up excess water and splashes providing the added level of traction to keep people safe from slip and fall accidents. Bath mats are also extremely hygienic. Microbial bath mats like the ones offered by Jessup Manufacturing keep mildew and bacteria at bay, even in the wetness conditions.
Bath mats provide a more clean, minimalist feel, however you can now purchase them in more varying designs and shapes. They are generally less expensive than bath rugs and tend to last longer because of their ability to stand up against water and bacteria.
Here are several factors to consider when purchasing a non-slip bath mat:
Size
The standard bath mat is 20x30 inches, so make sure you measure the location you intend to place it in. If you are looking for a full tub or square shower option keep this in mind. You will also want to make sure you choose a non-slip bath mat that accounts for a drain hole depending where you will be placing it.
Level of Traction
Another term for traction is also the level of coefficient which is the main purpose of the mat- to provide friction to prevent again a slip and fall. Non-slip bath mats can provide different levels of traction and varying grit levels, so make sure you choose the best option for your application. In most cases, look for a fine grade PVC vinyl bath mat because that is most comfortable on bare feet while still providing adequate traction.
Compliance Considerations
Just like not all bath mats have the same level of traction, they do not all carry the same compliance certifications or considerations. Depending who will be using the bath mat and where you are installing it make sure you look for the following organizations on the bath mat website or packaging: Prop 65, ADA, NFSI High Traction, and OSHA certified.
Material
A high-quality mat bat will be flexible and made of antimicrobial material. This should be stated directly on the box. Antimicrobial material ensures that the mat stays free and clean of mold and mildew, which is a common concern in the bathroom. Flexibility allows for the mat to easily lay flat and settle on uneven surfaces, creating a grip to prevent it from movement when wet.
