How to Apply Anti-Slip Stair Treads

Applying anti-slip stair treads is one of the easiest ways to provide additional traction to any surface. The possibilities are truly endless- think beyond stairs! From ramps, showers, boats, or ladders, stair treads offer an excellent option to prevent slip and fall accidents.

Installing anti-slip stair treads takes only minutes and can help save lives.

Where Can You Use Anti-Slip Stair Treads?
Non-slip stair treads can be applied almost anywhere you wish to add traction and prevent slipping, as long as you purchase the correct grit and choose one made for your environment (indoor/outdoor). Unfortunately, they do not generally work well on porous surfaces- a smooth finished surface is recommended. This means if you are applying over an area that has grout lines to consider cutting out the width of the grout line. When you wash the floor this will ensure water doesn’t get trapped underneath. If you are not able to cut out those areas, consider filling in cracks and smoothing out bumpy areas for best results.

How to Apply Anti-Slip Stair Treads
Applying anti-slip stair treads can be done in a matter of minutes and will last a very long time if taken care of properly.

First, prepare the surface. The area you are applying the anti-slip stair treads need to be clean of all residue and completely dry. Don’t use any cleaning products that contain silicone or leave a coating, such as a powdered cleaner. You will also want to fill in any holes or smooth out any uneven areas of the surface before application.

Next, size the tread before applying. Most of the time you can purchase treads for the exact size so no cutting is required. However, if you purchase a sheet or larger tread make sure you cut them before your application.

To adhere the treads to your surface, peel back a couple inches of the paper backing at a time. Don’t apply the entire tread at once, but start in the closet corner and slowly work your way to the other end. Avoid touching the adhesive if possible, gently applying from one side to the other. If you are using the treads on a slope or ramp it is very easy to apply, use the same instructions.

While no curing time is needed, you will want to finish the job by firmly rubbing the tread into place. This can be done with your hand or a rubber roller and will remove any air or dust to make sure the stair tread is perfectly adhered.

Caring For Your Anti-Slip Stair Treads
Once applied, you can treat the treads as you would an extension to the surface they are on. Using water or a mild floor cleaner is all that is required.

Quality anti-slip stair treads can easily last months, even years in some cases depending on the environment and foot traffic they receive. Make sure you choose a reputable brand with ultra strong adhesion and that meets your usage requirements.
