Everything You Need to Know About Skateboard Decks

Any skateboarder knows the deck is an integral part of the skateboard. Without the deck, no skateboard exists. It is typically made of wood and serves as the base of the skateboard, in most cases running about approximately 32 inches long and 8 inches wide. However, skateboard decks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they can be made from different materials such as wood, plastic, or composite materials. Skateboard decks can also be customized with graphics, stickers, and other artwork.

The deck is what the skateboarder stands on while riding, and it is also the surface on which they perform tricks. Because the deck is the main component of a skateboard it’s imperative to protect it. Failure to take good care of your skateboard deck can cause major injury.

How to Protect Your Skateboard Deck
There are a few key ways to protect the life of your skateboard deck.

1. Use grip tape: Grip tape is a rough, sandpaper-like material that is applied to the top of the skateboard deck to provide traction for the skateboarder's feet. It can also help protect the deck from wear and tear.

2. Use a deck protector: A deck protector is a clear plastic or composite material that fits over the top of the skateboard deck and protects it from scratches, dings, and other damage.

3. Store your skateboard indoors: If you can, try to store your skateboard indoors in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and moisture. This can help prevent the deck from warping or becoming damaged.

4. Avoid dropping your skateboard: Try to be careful when handling your skateboard, especially when it is not in use. Dropping the skateboard or letting it fall to the ground can damage the deck and shorten its lifespan.

5. Regularly clean and maintain your skateboard: Regularly cleaning and maintaining your skateboard can help prolong its life. This includes wiping down the deck, tightening the trucks, and replacing any worn or damaged parts as needed.

Finding the Best Skateboard Grip Tape
Grip tape is an essential component of protecting the skateboard deck and the skateboarder. It provides an added level of traction used to help the skateboarder maintain control while riding and performing tricks.

Grip tape comes in a variety of colors and patterns, and it can be customized with graphics and artwork. Some grip tape brands like Jessup Manufacturing are known for their durability and long-lasting grip, while others may be more prone to wearing out or peeling over time.

No matter what brand you go with, make sure the grip tape is made of silicon-carbide instead of aluminum oxide. Silicon-carbide is what sandpaper is made from, although grip tapes have a much lower grit compared to a regular piece of sandpaper. Aluminum oxide, while less expensive, does not provide a durable long-lasting grip.

Grip tape also comes in various grit-levels. Depending on the type of skateboarding you are looking to do you might want a higher or lower grit. Know that with a higher grit you’ll likely be destroying your shoes very quickly. Most skateboarders find that a regular (medium) grit provides the perfect balance of foot hold and quick release- and without destroying your shoes in the process.

Application of the grip tape is also important to its longevity. To apply grip tape to a skateboard deck, you will need to first clean the deck and remove any dirt or debris. Then, carefully align the grip tape with the deck and press it down firmly, starting at the center and working your way out to the edges. Use a sharp blade or razor to trim off the excess grip tape around the edges of the deck.

How to Keep Your Skateboard Clean
Keeping your skateboard clean is also one of the easiest ways to keep your deck protected and working longer. It is also fairly inexpensive and takes minimal time and effort.

Here are a few tips for keeping your skateboard clean:
1. Wipe down the deck regularly: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the deck after each skate session. This will help remove dirt, sweat, and grime that can build up on the deck over time.

2. Clean the wheels and trucks: Use a dry cloth or a soft brush to clean the wheels and trucks. This will help remove any dirt or debris that can accumulate and cause the skateboard to ride poorly.

3. Use a mild soap and water to clean the deck: If the deck is particularly dirty or sticky, you can use a mild soap and water to clean it. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents, as these can damage the deck or cause it to become slippery.

4. Dry the skateboard thoroughly: After cleaning the skateboard, make sure to dry it thoroughly to prevent rust or other damage. This is especially important for the trucks and bearings.

5. Store the skateboard in a dry place: When the skateboard is not in use, store it in a dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. This will help prevent the deck from warping or becoming damaged.

By following these tips, you can help keep your skateboard clean and in good condition for a longer period of time.
