Are Your School’s Emergency Signs Up to Code?
Most school buildings utilize electric exit signs throughout their corridors. These signs are ubiquitous, not just in schools but in all sorts of commercial buildings. They are so common that we tend to think that electric exit signs must be the best option for our safety. But that’s not actually the case. It’s time to re-examine the school safety signage at your children’s school and ask your school administrators if they are really the best they can be.
Electric emergency exit signs are wired into the electric system. Over the course of its life, a standard electric sign will generate about half a million pounds of CO2. Electric exit signs remain lit constantly during business hours to help make schools as safe as possible, and when the power goes out, they are equipped with backup battery packs that allow them to stay illuminated.
However, these battery packs don’t last forever. Legally, electric exit signs need to be checked at least once a month and their battery packs need to be fully drained and recharged once every year. Unfortunately, this safety precaution frequently gets overlooked, causing battery stores to dwindle. And beyond the batteries, bulbs in electric exit signs often burn out without anyone noticing. Under normal circumstances, this isn’t much of an issue, but in an emergency situation, it can make a big difference.
A safer, more cost-effective, and greener alternative to electric exit signs is photoluminescent exit signs. These exit signs absorb energy from the ambient light that surrounds them. That energy gets stored up and causes the signs to glow when the lights go out. GloBrite® Eco Exit signs are designed to glow in excess of 90 minutes, and they are even visible during smoky conditions. In lighted conditions, they are highly visible due to their bright green or red printing.
While electric exit signs might fail in emergency conditions, photoluminescent signs are always ready. They can last in excess of 25 years with virtually no maintenance. Plus, because photoluminescent exit signs don’t require any electricity, they can provide substantial cost savings for any school.
